Red the buck

I know I’m not supposed to be falling in love with my rabbits.  It’s purely a research project intended to assess the feasibility of breeding rabbits as a sustainable source for food and fertilizer.  But – gosh they are so cute!

In the picture above, you can see that Red, our brown buck has taken well is mating.  Here he is with Jane, a New Zealand white rabbit.  As a novice to rabbitry, it was rather difficult for me to distinguish between the male and female rabbits at first, but now two testicles have clearly descended from his body cavity. He is still young - we only recently could observed this change, which occurs at around 12 weeks (4 months).

Red has quite the personality.  I’m able to pet him and he seems to enjoy the attention.
