Free to Smile visit and Brave Tom

Nov 14, 2017

It’s no secret that we get really excited about our guests. This month, the Gwango team got really excited about a second visit from the “Free to Smile” volunteers.  The team came to Hwange for a short break after spending a week at Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo where they performed free cleft lip surgeries for 28 Zimbabwean patients.

Two of the volunteers stayed a few extra days to help out at the local clinics at Main Camp and in Dete. They even came to the rescue when one of our other guests “Tom” needed to be patched up. Danny and I tagged along and learned a whole lot about emergency preparedness. Our clinics were surprisingly well equipped (given the state of our economy).  Our Dete nurses were friendly and informative.  Working with Leslie and Kim, the head nurse at the Main Camp clinic was able to pick up a few new techniques during a suture, which she performed with Kim and Leslie assisting.  “Free to Smile” also left behind a range of medical supplies which donated to the our Dete clinics (they even tucked some supplies into Gwango’s first aid kit as well).

A wholehearted thanks to Dr. Graham Chadd, Kim, Leslie and all our friends from “Free to Smile.”  We look forward to seeing you again.
